When to use the preposition IN
We use the preposition in to refer to: years, centuries, larger and less specific periods, such as a part of the day, a month, a season or a year. See the examples below:
- We are in 2021.
- We are in the century of technology.
- I always brush my teeth in the morning
- My birthday is in April.
- Temperatures are lower in winter.
We also use the preposition in to talk about environments, the largest ones, such as cities, stores, countries, neighborhoods and parts of the house, as in the following examples:
- I used to live in New York.
- I am in my bedroom.
- Miami is in Florida
We also use the preposition in when referring to readings that are (or could be) on a paper:
- I read in the newspaper.
- Instructions are in the e-mail.
When to use the preposition ON
We use the preposition on to refer to: dates and days. See the examples below:
- She was born on July 26th.
- I go to the park on Mondays and Fridays.
- We usually get together on Christmas
We use the preposition on to speak of places, with surfaces, such as streets or objects on top of others. See the examples below:
- The book is on the table.
- I left the keys on the sofa.
- The building is on Auroch Street.
We also use the preposition on for information in electronic media that could not be turned into paper:
- I saw a really funny video on youtube.
- He is on the phone.
- You can’t believe everything on the internet.
When to use the preposition AT
We use the preposition at for specific times, times and specific places.
- I am not hungry at the moment.
- I will see you at 10 pm.
- The rock concert will be at the stadium.
